We’re Sorry To See David Tennant Go: A Video Tribute

I’m Sorry!

Doctor Who’s David Tennant is no longer playing the roll, but he shall be remembered as (I think) the best actor to play the roll ever. I’ve taken a look at the older (pre-reboot) episodes, and could not find anyone else who had his range.

And in the spirit of seeing him move on, I thought it was appropriate that I post this video from io9, where he finds 120 ways over the episodes of his tenure to say, “I’m sorry.” It’s actually quite interesting how many different ways he says it.

The Eye of the Python

This video doesn’t need much of an explanation if you’re a fan of Monty Python. It’s adapted from the skit, “The Parrot Sketch“.

From the notes on the YouTube Page:

Right! Stop that! It’s SILLY! Dear friends, if you’re not familiar with the timeless genius of Monty Python then this one might be a bit over your head. It’s an adaptation of the following classic sketch:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npjOSLCR2hE

I got the idea for this from, unsurprisingly, reading Richard Dawkins’ The Greatest Show On Earth. Particularly the chapter which deals with the enormous amount of evidence pointing to life having NOT been designed by an intelligent agency, given all the incredible design flaws that can be seen throughout all of biology. The vertebrate eye is a very good example of this, for the reasons you can hear herein.

I usually like to give detailed references where I can, but the research for this one was just a wild goose-chase around the net picking up bits of info here and there, mainly from Wikipedia. So tough, you’ll have to take my word for it.

Yes, yes, its all a bit exaggerated. I am very grateful for my eyes and am in fact one of the lucky ones who cannot complain of any eye weakness of any kind.

ONLY MONTY PYTHON PEOPLE ARE ALLOWED TO DMCA ME ON THIS ONE. AND IF YOU DO, GUYS, CAN I GET THE COURT PAPERS AUTOGRAPHED?! I definitely wont put an ad on this one, its definitely NOT exclusively my own material!

Footprints in the snow

When I got home yesterday, noticed that the road I live on, which is a rural one, had been plowed. This is a nice change, where often the only time we get a clear road is when the snow finally melts. Over (what looked like) 8 cm of snow had fallen in the last two days, which of course makes getting in and out of my driveway difficult when there’s no time to shovel.

When I pulled into my driveway, I was surprised to see that my driveway had been cleared. I know my wife and I hadn’t done it. After I pulled in to my garage, I walked back out to see what had been done. It was obviously done by someone with a snow blower (the edge of the drive was a sharp 90 deg angle, with a small area for the first row off to the side), but I had nothing obvious anywhere that gave me a clue as to who had done it. Well, I did find one clue, but it won’t really help me find out who it was.

The footprints of a Good Person(TM)

A single, well-formed footprint. That and a bunch of less clear footprints gives me all I need to know that someone out there deserves a ‘Thank You’.

So, whoever cleared my driveway, again: “Thank you.” If you come around again, leave a note or something telling me who you are, so that I might pay you something, anything, for taking time out of your day to snow-blow our driveway without asking for anything in return.

Yes, there are still good people out there.

[Update: A year later, I finally found out who did this: Steve, my next door neighbor. He shyly admitted it to my wife while we were helping out another neighbor who's car has been stuck in a drift. Thank you, Steve!]

A Plea to the Young Believer

I just found a new video on YouTube (originally saw here).

The video is incredibly moving, and doesn’t even try to push anything onto anyone; simply, open your mind to possibilities. The world is so grand and spectacular; to push a rigid belief structure upon it destroys that beauty. Sadly, though, there are those that will never ever open themselves up to doubt, to question everything. I pity them, but they chose to cage themselves.

On a lighter note, I actually had to trash some comments from advert bots, so apparently my blog is getting out there a little. If only I had something more to write than to just parrot what I see. Isn’t that what everyone else does, though? No. Some people have original ideas. Here’s to hoping that those will come soon…

A.D. Teaser Trailer (+ Interviews)

Let me just put this video here so that you can have an honest reaction. (For the full effect, watch it on YouTube directly at 480p.)

Okay. What you just saw was called “A.D.”, a CG animated Horror-Adventure that is looking to become a feature film. Now that you’ve watched it, what’s your reaction to it?

My reaction? HELL YES! I’m all for zombie movies; I am a big fan of Zombieland, Shawn of the Dead, and many others out there. A CG, gritty zombie fest? WANT!

For more information, check out the interview with the creators/producers.

The ‘true story’ of how Dr. King kept Uhura on Star Trek

I thought this was awesome, and a great story. I didn’t grow up during the Original Series era; I actually grew up with TNG, Deep Space 9 and Voyager.

From the SCI FI Wire:

If you’re a Star Trek fan, you’ve no doubt heard the story of how Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. persuaded Nichelle Nichols to remain on the original series as Lt. Uhura when she was thinking of leaving after the first season.

Well, we’ve heard it, too, but given that we celebrate Dr. King’s legacy this week, it’s worth repeating, especially as Savas Abadsidis recently interviewed Nichols for Planet Waves and posts what he’s calling the “true story” of how that fateful encounter took place, in her own words.
